Planting a home garden is a very rewarding hobby. You can
spend time outdoors, nurture new life, and enjoy the fruits of your
labor in a very literal way.
However, planning your garden takes a bit of time and effort. Here are
a few ideas.
1. Start early. Don’t wait until March or April to start thinking about
growing a garden. Order seed catalogs in the late summer or early fall
for the next season. Over the winter pore over the pages to select the
plants you want to use in the spring. This is the time to stock up on
soil, discounted tools and supplies like gardening gloves, and later,
seedlings. Then when February comes, you can start rooting your seeds
in small pots so that when March and April roll around, you will be
ready to transplant them into the ground.
At the beginning of spring on a nice day, get outdoors and start
working the ground for your garden. Mark off the area and till the
soil, using a spade, cultivator, or pitchfork to break up the clods and
lumps of dirt. Remove stones, dead leaves, and greedy weeds. Add
topsoil to clay or nutrients to parched earth.
When you are ready to plant, place each seed or seedling the proper
distance from the others in each row. Bury it at the recommended depth
in a sunny or shady area following the package or nursery directions.
Water each plant afterward to make the soil moist.
Keep an eye on your seedlings for the next several weeks. Get rid of
new weeds and take steps to scare away or eliminate pests like insects,
small animals, and rodents. Keep your pets and kids away from the
garden so the plants can grow without being bothered.
When the plants bloom or bear, pluck these off right away so the dying
blossoms will not sap the stem’s nourishment. As the season ends,
remove all foliage and dead leaves. Keep your garden area clean for
next year.
