If you’re planning to put in a garden this year, don’t wait
for the spring season to stock up on supplies. Instead, start shopping
at the end of summer and into early fall to get discounts, closeouts,
and generally the best deals.
Many gardeners can find discounts of 50% to 75% at the end of the
season. Why pay $50 for a wheelbarrow when you can get one for $15 if
you shop at the right time? You also can find great deals on items like
tools, gloves, pots, pesticides, and spring bulbs for planting.
After purchasing your supplies, be sure to store them in a clean,
organized area so you can find what you need when you’re ready.
Otherwise you may be unable to locate the things you bought months
earlier and end up having to buy duplicates, wasting former shopping
time and money. You can mark soil bags with purchase dates if you have
older ones on hand as well. Keep everything boxed up or arranged in a
similar location, like the shed, garage, basement, or attic. This will
save time when you get ready to start planting so you don’t have to run
around in search of equipment in one place, pots in another, and so on.
Don’t leave items sitting out in haphazard fashion. The kids may decide
to play with the pots and end up losing or breaking them. Or your cat
may mistake the soil for kitty litter. Stack supplies in boxes or place
them in bags if there is a chance they will get misused for other
purposes.
After using your supplies, clean them up and store them in the same
place. That way you will know where to find them next time. If you
stick them in the garage temporarily with a view to stashing them in
the shed later, and then forget about them, you might find they’re gone
by next season. Take care of materials and tools the same day and
they’ll be where you want them when you need them.
